This is the website of Matthew MacKisack, a writer and academic based in London.
I write about art and science and their histories; but really my subject is imagining, that strange ability to think otherwise.
I work at it from several angles - the cultural, the historical, the psychological - and explore its relationship with making art.
Over the past eight years or so I've focused on how the ability to imagine varies between people.
I've explored the impact of that variation - and particularly of aphantasia, the inability to produce mental images - on art and art history.
I'm currently writing a book on that subject for a general audience.
I also give lectures, curate exhibitions, and edit books.
This website serves as an introduction to my work and a place to find updates on my own and others' cross-disciplinary work on imagining.
